This road is perhaps the most spectacular so far. It certainly offered the most variety. First the decent from Brice (50F) down into the hot dry lands around Tropic (90F), then then up over a mountain range and back down via switchbacks to Escalante, then up to where the photo was taken. The vista here is so big you can not capture it in a single photo. In the photo, Dave is pointing to the road we'll be on once we get through a few more switchbacks, nice curvey ones that are fun. We shot some video to try and record the grandure of it all. (we have taken a number of videos and will load them onto the blog when we get home where we'll have sufficient memory.) The road then winds down through deep rock cuts and switchbacks to cross the Eccalante River and climbs back up several thousand feet to the top of a Mesa where for several km the road, with no shoulders, winds along the top of the Mesa with cliffs several hundred feet wide on both sides of the road. More twists and steep grades led us down to Bolder.
Between Bolder and Torrey the road climbs up and over a 9,800 foot pass. on the way we went from desert, to pine forest, to birch forest, to no trees. On the way the temperature dropped from 27 degree C to 17 degrees C.
Aside: If any readers run into Cliff Curtis at Durham Works Dept. please, on our behalf, thank him for recommending this road.
