Tough Pioneer times

Near Corral Reef, Utah, we saw this 1882 cabin. It was built by Elijah Cutler Behumin. He and his wife and their 8 children lived here, one of the first settlers in the area.

The parents and the two youngest lived in the cabin, with the older boys outside in a widened cliff dugout behind the house and the oldest girls sleeping in an old wagon box. It is surmised that they ate outside. Once they settled in, the rising river washed out their crops............how heart breaking.

PS obviously the window was added to keep the tourists out.
