We left Ouray and continued north through a rather tame river valley to Montrose, then headed east again along route 50. The road climbs up on to the high Blue Mesa where there was a contolled bush fire burning.....pretty large to see from the road...This land between the San Juan mountains and the Rocky mountains is very dry with only scrub vegetation.
We camped at a KOA in Gunnison only to wake up to frost on the bikes and frozen bagels. The tent was a cozy 40 degrees, and our sleeping bags didn't quite cut it.
