Durango through Silverton and on to Ouray

Route 550 going north from Durango is another of our really great roads. We drove past ski resorts, golf courses and ritzy chalets on our way up to Coldbank Pass at 10,640 ft. Shortly after that was Molas Pass at 10,900 feet, then down into Silverton to see the arrival of the train travelling from Durango to this historic town.

We then headed up over Red Mountain Pass at 11,008 feet where we had a cool lunch at the summit.

ASIDE: one thing we noticed that was different between Canadians and Americans....We tend to build our roads around mountains and through valleys, while Americans just build 'em right over the top. Thank goodness for the Great Depression and cheap labour, or Dave and I would never have been able to see all this.

The road down from Red Mountain Pass to Ouray gets our award for the scariest road of the trip. The numerous blind curves and switchbacks are carved into the vertical canyon wall, and the road is narrow with no shoulders and no guardrails. Unfortunately on such a road one cannot stop to take pictures so we no photos documenting how scarey it really was.
