We got an early start from Cheyenne and headed west to Laramie (the most lawless town in the 1800's). It was surprisingly enjoyable, winding, light winds, magnificent vistas, not a lot of traffic. The high plains have low sage brush growing all over the landscape and tumbleweed blowing across the road. No trees to be seen. You can see the road winding ahead for miles and miles.
At Laramie we had planned to head south into the Colorado rockies but all the scenic byways were closed due to heavy snowfall (remember it's May!!) so we continued on to Rawlings where at 7000 feet we crossed the Continental Divide. Shortly later we bid farewell to I80 (the land of big big sky) and headed south to Craig, Colorado just west of Steamboat Springs. We followed a meandering river, drove past a snow capped peak, dodged a bad storm, with the landscape transitioning from sagebrush, to grazing lands, to irrigated farm land.
